What's the best time of year to dive in Moorea?

Diving in Moorea is a year-round affair, with the island's warm waters inviting divers to explore its undersea wonders at any time. The temperatures hover comfortably between 27°C and 29°C, creating an ideal aquatic playground for a variety of marine life. While Moorea does experience seasonal changes, they are subtler than in many other parts of the world. The wetter months are generally from December to February, when the island sees most of its rainfall, yet this scarcely diminishes the allure of the underwater realm.

Peak season — July to November

The island's peak season coincides with the migration of the humpback whales, which grace the waters from July through November. Their majestic presence draws visitors from around the globe, making it the island's busiest time for marine enthusiasts.

Best shark months — January to March

For those particularly interested in the island's shark population, the months from January to March are especially rewarding. During this period, Moorea often experiences swells, predominantly from the north or northeast, which bring about an increase in shark sightings.

Great all year round

Turtles, those serene and ancient mariners, are a constant presence in the waters around Moorea, seen throughout the year. They add a touch of tranquility to the already peaceful underwater landscapes of the island. Divers can enjoy their graceful company whether they're visiting in the balmy days of the high season or the quieter months of the year.

In summary, Moorea presents an all-season diving destination. The low season, spanning from November to the end of May, is particularly favourable for shark observation, with fewer tourists and a higher likelihood of encounters with these impressive predators. Regardless of what one wishes to witness, Moorea's diverse marine offerings ensure that every plunge beneath its waves is a discovery and every season has its own unique charm and possibilities.
